Abstract:
The DART Project (Diabetes Augmented Reality Training) addresses the pressing need for equitable, accessible, and engaging diabetes education, particularly in the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits through physical activity. In response to rising global diabetes rates and the uneven access to quality self-management resources, DART aims to empower individuals with Type I and Type II diabetes by leveraging innovative digital tools.
The project’s core objectives include improving knowledge about diabetes, promoting sustained physical activity, reducing sedentary behavior, and enhancing digital literacy among people with diabetes and their support networks.
To achieve these aims, an interdisciplinary committee of experts in medicine, sport sciences, nursing, and nutrition collaboratively designed an augmented reality (AR) application. This tool features a virtual trainer that guides users through individualized exercise programs adapted to their needs and clinical profiles.
The DART methodology integrates user-centered design principles and evidence-based practices to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
Key outcomes of the project include: (1) the development of a mobile AR app for diabetes-related exercise interventions; (2) the launch of an educational Moodle platform targeting patients, families, teachers, and coaches; and (3) a podcast series featuring interviews with healthcare professionals and patients on the role of physical activity in diabetes management. In conclusion, DART demonstrates how digital innovation can enhance equitable access to diabetes education and empower individuals across diverse contexts to take active roles in their health and well-being.
